Published
August 5, 2020

Cleaning the carpet at home doesn’t have to be difficult — with a lot of different ways to scrub, disinfect and deep clean this essential home accessory, the actual task should always be easy, fast and fuss-free.

In this article, we will show you the 10 best ways to deep clean and remove stains from your carpet.

How to Deep Clean a Carpet at Home: 10 Best Ways

1. Blot stains gently and avoid rubbing them

For spills and stains on the carpet, always resist the urge to treat and clean the affected area by scrubbing right away. This will only do more harm than good by spreading the stain particles deep down into the carpet’s fibers, resulting in hard-to-remove, deep-seated stains.

So what do you need to do? Dab and blot! Simply apply a gentle cleaning solution on a clean and dry cloth, towel or sponge and go at the surface carefully. This will allow you to apply a small pressure to break the stain away without spreading it all over the fabric.

For best results, always start blotting from the outer edge of the stain and inward toward the center.

2. Use club soda to remove beer and wine stains

Club soda as a carpet stain remover? You heard that right!

For beer and wine stains, this is a highly effective ingredient that can break away even the toughest marks from these alcoholic beverages.

The first step is to apply club soda onto a clean cloth and use it to blot the stain from the fabric. If you find that the stain begins to slowly fade away, add some more club soda onto the cloth.

For tougher stains, create a mixture of white vinegar and water instead to break away the stain particles. Using a spray bottle, spritz the cleaning solution onto the stained area and wait for about 10 to 15 minutes. Press a cleaning sponge onto the area afterwards to break away the stain. Do this repeatedly until the stain is no longer visible.

3. Apply shaving cream to remove any type of stain

As weird as it may sound, shaving cream is also a good alternative for removing carpet stains. Just apply the cream directly to the stain and let it sit for a good 30 minutes. Blot it with a clean and dry cloth afterwards.

To finish it off, spray the area using a mixture of white vinegar and water. This should be a great final way to remove the stain from the carpet.

4. Get rid of gum stains by using ice cubes

For gum stains on your carpet, get a few ice cubes to solve and scrape away the problem — literally. Simply press these ice cubes against the hardened gum for about a minute. Once the gum has gone frozen, use a spoon or a scraper to lift up the glob and remove it altogether.

5. Eliminate grease stains with dish soap

Got grease stains on your carpet? No problem. All you have to do is apply a few drops of dish soap into a cup of warm water. Mix it thoroughly until you create a good and concentrated cleaning solution.

Transfer the cleaning solution into a spray bottle and spritz it onto the grease stain. Afterwards, blot it up with a cloth or a paper towel.

6. Heat hardened wax stains away

To treat candle wax stains away, simply heat the wax back to its liquid form to successfully remove it. Use a white cloth and place it over an iron until the candle melts. Scrape off the softened and liquid form repeatedly with a plastic knife until the stains have fully been removed.

7. Use hydrogen peroxide to treat blood stains away

Hydrogen peroxide is a good cleaning ingredient for blood stains. Whether it’s a few drops or a messy trail of blots, this cleaning procedure is a tried and tested approach to solving the issue.

First, break away and loosen the dried blood stains with water and a mild detergent. Use a butter knife to scrape off as much stains from the carpet fibers and fabric as much as possible.

Apply a few drops of hydrogen peroxide to the stain blot it with white cotton balls or paper towels afterwards. Do this repeatedly until the carpet stains are no more.

8. Clean pet waste with organic cleaning ingredients

From pet urine to litter, it’s always best to use organic cleaning ingredients to preserve the material of the carpet fabric. Simply apply these stain removers directly onto the carpet stain and begin scrubbing them away. The all-natural ingredients are highly effective in killing odor and germs from these waste materials.

9. Scrape out and wash away candy stains

Kids and candies are one of life’s biggest combinations. So when you end up having your carpet stained with candy, you should always be ready to have a go at it right away!

Simply scrape out the candy from the carpet using a plastic or butter knife. Afterwards, soak the affected carpet area with a sponge dipped in a mixture of water and mild soap. Finish it off by blotting the area with a cotton cloth or paper towels.

10. Deep clean the carpet regularly

Apart from these highly effective cleaning methods, the best way to ensure your carpet stays squeaky clean and neat is to deep clean it on a regular basis. You can do this by using a steam carpet cleaner — a common and effective carpet cleaning procedure used by professional carpet cleaners and homeowners alike.
